The scientific community remains unable to answer the abundance of questions that challenge the organic food market. It is also unable to prove many of the assertions organic defenders encourage.
A common misconception about organic foods is they have an innate healthiness that superceeds the nutritional values of conventionally grown food. However, organic foods are considered healthier not because of qualities they have, but because of qualities they lack -- specifically pesticides, artificial ingredients and trans fats, according to the National Organic Program.
Proponents of an organic diet, such as Valentina Daly, a senior in criminology, assert that organics are healthier, more environmentally friendly and have a greater sustainability than conventional crops.
No happy place for old hippies in 'Jimi'
GUY FONTAINE, a 72-but-looks-62-years-old transplant to California, is playing golf when he feels the ground shift. Only it's not an earthquake. It's a mind quake, and in minutes, Guy is happily piloting his 1958 Bel Air down a familiar Oklahoma road. But only in his imagination. In reality, the recent widower and former sportswriter is putt-putting along in a golf cart on the Harbor Freeway. Soon he's got traffic fouled up and a highway patrolman in his face. And soon after that, Guy finds his bewildered self in Mission Pescadero in Half Moon Bay, an assisted-living facility populated by aging hippies and run by a martinet who makes Cruella De Vil seem like Mother Teresa. So begins Tim Sandlin's darkly comic and disturbing novel "Jimi Hendrix Turns Eighty," which is set in the year Hendrix would have hit that milestone, 2022 -- a year, in fact, that is not so very far away.
No malfunction as Prince rocks halftime
Phew! CBS got through the halftime show without a "wardrobe malfunction." The Artist Formerly Known as a Munchkin of Wardrobe Dysfunction began by singing "Let's Go Crazy," but he didn't. Prince, who became a Jehovah's Witness in the mid-1990s, no longer wears yellow, butt-baring pants as he did at the 1991 MTV Video Music Awards (prompting Howard Stern's send-up at the '92 VMAs). The closest thing to a fashion statement Sunday night was an odd kerchief on his head. So the NFL had no repeat of the 2004 Janet Jackson/Justin Timberlake show, which happened the last time CBS broadcast the game. The 48-year-old Prince, who rose to stardom in the '80s with his distinctive fusion of R&B, funk, soul and rock, once looked androgynous and produced songs that (lest we forget) drove Tipper Gore nuts (and made her a fat target for anti-censorship types like Frank Zappa).
