| Abbott To Initiate First Study To Evaluate XIENCE(TM) V Everolimus ...
Abbott today announced plans to initiate the world's first drug-eluting stent clinical trial solely in women. The SPIRIT WOMEN trial will aim to increase understanding of how heart disease affects women, and will assess the performance of the XIENCE(TM) V Everolimus Eluting Coronary Stent System in women with previously untreated coronary artery lesions. Each year, more women than men die of cardiovascular disease (CVD), yet women receive only 33 percent of angioplasties, stents and bypass surgeries; 28 percent of implantable defibrillators; and 36 percent of open-heart surgeries(1). This may be attributed to the fact that diagnosis of CVD in women is more challenging than in men, as women typically exhibit different symptoms than men because their symptoms are more gradual and subtle.
Medics in Vital Cancer Research
TOP doctors at Coventry's University Hospital are investigating whether the humble aspirin can prevent cancer of the windpipe. As part of the research, aspirin is being used with an anti- ulcer drug to try to stop a condition called Barrett's oesophagus from developing into cancer of the windpipe, or oesophageal cancer. Coventry is one of 50 UK centres taking part in the trial, one of the largest cancer prevention trials in the world, with 5,000 men and women with Barrett's oesophagus taking part. .
Sacramento HeartScan Leads Fight Against Heart Attacks With ...
Bellinger said the information gleaned from these so-called "fast CT" scans could help in the fight against sudden cardiac death, which claims the lives of more than 250,000 people in the U.S. each year. The ACCF/AHA consensus statement was developed in collaboration with the Society of Atherosclerosis Imaging and Prevention (SAIP) and the Society of Cardiovascular Computed Tomography (SCCT). The statement was also co-published in the January 2007 issue of Circulation. Sacramento HeartScan now offers more imaging modalities than any other imaging facility in the region. CT scans at Sacramento HeartScan, including lung, heart and brain, are performed using the LightSpeed VCT 64-slice scanner, the only one of its kind in the area. Unlike more conventional four-slice scanners, the LightSpeed VCT 64-slice captures clear images of the heart between beats and also provides clear, more precise pictures of other organs and tissue.
